starstruck
let this be our lesson in love
The gentle warmth of the sun's rays, veiled by light clouds, contrasted with the cool iced tea in her hands. In truth, she wanted nothing more than to be hidden and isolated inside her new apartment, however the tendrils of despair and loneliness were already tightening their hold around her. And she knew that it necessary to remove herself and leave. It was one of the many tactics she has learned over the course of her counseling sessions in order to combat her depression. So here she sat, on a park bench, staring idly at the bubbling fountain of the center plaza and trying to redirect her attention to anything other than her craving for social isolation.

Though she sat alone amidst a wandering crowd, the feeling of loneliness felt less palpable than it had in her apartment. The new space she occupied in the new city was not as lavish and luxurious as she was used to growing up, but it still held a special place in her heart as it was of her own selection. Sure, she acquiesced to choosing a place in the upper part of the city on behalf of her parents' insistence, but that was as far as she allowed in decision-making. Otherwise, it would have belied the point of her independence. Therefore, everything else (the apartment, the furnishings, decor) was all of her own choosing and such meant more to her. She made it her own home.

It was hard to believe that she's established residence in San Diego for little over a month now, as it felt to her that she's been here even longer. It was only natural to feel a way, she recollected from her conversation with her counselor, considering now she was beginning to make her own decisions and develop her newly found independence to how she preferred.

A ghost of a smile appeared on her lips as she idly reached up to touch her hair. One of the many new decisions she's made upon her move to San Diego was to cut her hair short. While seemingly small in retrospect, the choice held more meaning to her than others would know. All her life, she wore her hair long as it was what her parents preferred. They cooed and fawned over her golden hair, showering her with compliments and petting her more times than necessary. By cutting her hair short, she was all-in-all metaphorically severing her ties to the girl that she once was--as cliche as it may sound. She's heard of how freeing it could feel to change one's look, but never could she relate until now. Though her parents were upset, Rose was beginning to feel more like her own person and less like the shell she once was and her parents respected that.

She took a slow sip from her drink, savoring the raspberry-peach flavor, and appreciating the good decision it was to come to the park. Already, she was beginning to feel less tense but sitting here wasn't going to do her a world of good. So she stood and gradually moved towards the fountain. Glittering coins littered the bottom of the fountain and it tugged her lips up at the thought that each coin symbolized an individual's wish. After all, wasn't that the custom of tossing coins into a fountain? Rose felt too old and her childlike wonder weathered away by hardships to be wishing on coins, but she couldn't help but overhear a young boy asking their mom for a quarter to toss into the water. "I'm sorry, sweetie, I don't have any more change," the mother responded in kind. "We used it all to get ice cream, remember?"

Rose was already rummaging through her crossbody purse for her coin purse without question. She withdrew a quarter before slipping the coin purse away and approached the family. "Here you go. Make sure you wish really hard," she offered with a kind smile, bending to be eye-to-eye with the boy who eagerly took the coin and rushed to the fountain. "Thank you," the mother said in place of her child with a smile of her own. "It's my pleasure," Rose responded, her heart warmed by the sight of such a large and happy grin on the child's face as they hurled her quarter into the water and moved back to join the two women. "Thanks very much, miss!" He said with some prompting of the mom. "You're welcome," Rose giggled and waved as the two moved away and left her standing in a bubble of content.

He couldn’t do it anymore. Declan had been sitting at his desk in the office in back of the tattoo shop staring blankly at a materials invoice. He’d probably read the sheet 5 or 6 times now without retaining any information, and now he finally set it down, rubbing his eyes gently and leaning back in his chair. The past few weeks had been full of work and appointments, and more trips to the gym than usual as he continued to try distracting himself from all of the serious thinking he needed to do. After leaving home to move across the country, skipping out on Harvard and starting his business…Declan never thought he’d find himself this out of his depth again. He’d come into his own here, his shop was successful, he was successful, but navigating a relationship as serious as what he had with Emmett…it wasn’t easy.

He was ready to marry her. He had been even when he’d tentatively brought it up with her three weeks ago. She’d prompted the discussion and while she’d promised to think about it, he couldn’t say that she seemed too eager to take the plunge. Of course, who could blame her? It hadn’t worked very well the last time. But she’d agreed to think about it, and that was all that he could really ask for, wasn’t it? So what if he already had a ring stashed away in the drawer of his desk, so what if he’d already looked into renting out his loft, knowing that when they moved in together it wouldn’t be above his beloved shop where he lived now. He was ready for all of it….or. most.

Children he couldn’t wrap his mind around. Em’s son, Theo, was enough, as far as he was concerned. Declan had already let the boy’s father, Gabe, and his own father instill plenty of fear in him over simply being the child’s step-father. He wasn’t interested in the slightest in having children of his own. Not for a very long time at least….which he knew wouldn’t be soon enough for Emmett. He overlooked the age difference between them most of the time but there were days that it was glaring. And this was the part where he did his best to quiet the thoughts before even more doubt set in, and he found himself pushing his desk chair back and standing to stretch.

He’d cleared his afternoon for paperwork, but seeing as that wasn’t happening at the moment Declan decided to use his lack of appointments to get out of the shop for a while. A little fresh air and a change of scene would be good for him, and he found himself drawn towards the park near his house where he went from time to time in search of respite. He didn’t bother telling his staff he was leaving, but dipped out the back door taking in a deep breath, happy with the familiar scent of the area, coffee from the café across the street, flowers from the shop just next door, and sugary sweetness from the candy shop another couple doors down.

The familiarity of it was bracing. He’d gotten so used to this place, not just the city, but the little cluster of small businesses where he worked and lived along with the owners of the other places. It had been six years last fall since he’d opened shop here and it felt like even longer. Of course, at 24 years old, six years was a long time. He’d already been here longer than his Harvard degree would have taken, or the first one, at least.

Declan didn’t think much anymore about what his life would have been like if he’d stayed, showed up in Cambridge that next morning instead of L.A., probably followed in the footsteps of his older brother and now…well he’d be part-way into a Master’s degree in business, rather than half a decade into a career as a small business owner. He didn’t regret the decision to change paths, but that didn’t mean there weren’t things that were worth missing about his old life. His relationship with his sister for one and…Rose.

It was like stars colliding as he suddenly thought her name and her face appeared in front of him as though he’d summoned her. He’d hardly noticed that his feet had carried him to the center of the park and he stood by the fountain, the spray of it glittering in the sunlight, and facing him on the other side of it was Rose. He’d have thought it was a mirage if she didn’t look so different from the last time he saw her, hair cut short, older…happier? He rubbed his eyes again, and gazed across the fountain at her, dumbfounded.

starstruck
let this be our lesson in love
Her smile remained intact even as the mother and son soon disappeared. She had a fleeting curiosity of what the boy wished for judging by the grin of contentment he wore. Rose pondered what she would have wished for at his age and drew blanks. After all, she had everything she could ever wish for growing up; her parents ensured that. Her family was well off to satisfy any materialistic desires and Rose had plenty of friends, but enough discipline and empathy to maintain a degree of responsibility. Yet it all changed the coming of her sixteenth birthday... Rose instantly shut down that train of thought, her heart clenching painfully as it always did when she thought of that night. She had come out to the park in order to escape the anchor of depression if only for a moment and she would do her best to maintain the emotional high for as long as she could.

She turned and continued on her trek with no particular destination in mind, just simply enjoying the sunshine and atmosphere. Her eyes gazed down at the collection of coins in the fountain, counting the many odd trinkets she discovered in there that weren't coins, while also ensuring she didn't bump into another. Her path brought her around the circumference of the fountain to the opposite end. It was only then did she feel the odd sensation that eyes were on her and thus her attention raised to lock onto the one person she did not anticipate running into at such a random time as this.

"It's you," she murmured softly, more or less affirming the reality to herself; confirming that this was no dream like she's had countless times of seeing him again.

Her heart clenched for a whole other reason and, this time, she did nothing to stop the flow of thoughts and emotion from spiraling. He looked different, yet still ever the same as she remembered him years ago. Her stomach was a flurry of nerves and she could hear her heart beat in her ears. Even the tattoo below her left ear twinged like an itch, though surely that was just a figment of her imagination.

Judging by the way he was staring at her, he was probably feeling the same flabbergasted disarray that she was. Whether it be the bundle of emotions at seeing him after so long or the resurfacing memories that played in her mind of their time together or a combination of both, Rose found herself petrified to her spot despite the underlining desire to embrace him. "Declan..." she murmured, his name both familiar yet foreign sounding from her lips. What else was she to say?

Though she's envisioned their reunion so many times, when faced with reality, she was at a loss of what to do and vulnerable to the intense emotions of happiness, relief and the lingering love she still felt for the man she hasn't seen in six long years. "I can't believe it," she spoke a little louder this time, unable to fight the faintest smile that rose on her lips and the bubble of laughter that came after. It was more a response to the overwhelming emotions at seeing him again then it was for humor purposes; she was delirious, surely, she thought as her smile only grew more.

Declan watched on in silence and confusion as Rose walked around the fountain, coming closer to him and affirming that he wasn’t seeing things, he wasn’t hallucinating, it was Rose, his Rose, here in the middle of the park. And when she looked up at him he was set aflame. Or it felt that way, as though every thought, memory, and feeling he had revolving around Rose was rushing back into him at once, overloading his senses so all he could do was stare, even as she spoke, looking and sounding as shocked and confused as he himself was. Clearly she hadn’t come here looking for him.

Like a magnetic was pulling him towards her, he moved in her direction without thinking, only stopping when they were a mere meter apart. ”Rose…” he echoed his name with her own, caught up in the surreal moment of seeing her, hearing his heartbeat fast and loud in his ears.

It was her laughter that broke his state of awe, the sound of it bringing a smile to his face, even after so long. He loved that sound, had once made it his life’s mission to hear it as much as possible, though then it was for Rose’s benefit, because he wanted to make her happy when she hadn’t been in so long. Now he wanted to hear the laugh because of the feelings it brought back to him. The feeling of being young and in love with no cares in the world. He wondered absently if they would still feel that way if they’d stayed together – carefree. He couldn’t imagine it. He was happy now, but he certainly had his burdens.

”I can’t either.” he responded, wondering if she’d found out, somehow, that he lived in San Diego now. He’d started over when he got here, cutting out nearly everyone from his life in New York, so it was only his family that even knew just where he was these days. Well, his family and the friends he’d accumulated in his time here.

He had a million questions to ask her, how she was, what she’d been up to, what she was going with her life, was she seeing anyone, but he settled for what felt like the most prudent, for the time being, ”What are you doing in San Diego?”

bittersweet
bound by the surprise of our glory days
The moment felt entirely too surreal and she prayed that this wasn't a dream. She has spent countless nights dreaming of this very moment that she would see him again, but every single time she had to wake to the crushing depression that they were still apart and would continue to be so. It was an endless painful cycle that persistently numbed her to the concept that she would ever see him again outside of her dreams. Yet here he was, standing so close and smiling and speaking to her! She wanted to touch him and confirm the reality of it all, but she was petrified to the spot and overwhelmed by so many emotions that it nearly left her breathless.

Her lips couldn't have stretched any wider and it felt both exhilarating and strange. It has been so long since she's truly smiled this way; only he was able to make her smile this genuine. They have been absent from each other's lives far too long for her to even recall what it was like to live in true happiness, but facing him now, she could remember it all. Her heart raced a mile a second and she could feel the pressing desire to cry solely from emotional overload. Her eyes glistened with the unshed tears when he asked her what she was doing in San Diego.

"I was offered a job here," she answered quickly. She had so much to share with him and yet none of it was coming out. She wanted to learn about his own adventures in these past years, to learn if he was as successful as she knew he would be, to ask if he was happy and if he missed her as she did him. Her hands felt slick from the condensation from her drink and she had forgotten entirely about her tea. Frankly, it was any wonder that it hadn't slipped from her grasp, but she quickly set it down on the concrete of the fountain to prevent that from actually happening. The movement finally also allowed her to break from her reverie.

Another soft laugh escaped her lips, one of incredulity and sheer happiness, as she shook her head. It was too much, far too much! Without giving it a second thought, she surged forward to embrace him tightly. Even if he didn't reciprocate, she just had to confirm that she wasn't dreaming. It was selfish of her to do so, especially considering she knew nothing of the man other than his past that they shared. However, the opportunity to actually feel him again was one she couldn't let slip by.

"It's r-really you," she murmured, her voice trembling with emotion. Her eyes finally betrayed her and let slip the few tears she had been holding at bay. They tickled her skin as they fell and Rose moved back from him to quickly swipe at them so that they didn't stain his shirt nor ruin her makeup. "I-I'm sorry," she breathed out. "I just can't believe it's really you. It's been so long and... Are you... are you busy?"

Now that she finally confirmed that she wasn't asleep, she couldn't let this opportunity pass either. She wanted to capture as much time with him as possible, even if little came out of it other than her own personal gratification. However, Rose wasn't ignorant to the fact that she couldn't simply appear out of the blue and expect that he drop whatever he was doing for her. Her hesitation was evident and she nervously reached up to toy with the ends of her hair while awaiting his answer, preparing herself for the worst. Old habits died hard.
