the nights of all my youth pressed into one glass
of water
The games always petrified Miguel. When he was in the pool, he would be driven to a near panic attack. Now he was driven to a panic attack for a new reason. His son was in the drawing. This year his son could be tossed into the games. Miguel had tried to reason with himself. Ángel’s name was only entered once. The chances of him being drawn were low. Very low. It was nearly impossible.

But, he couldn’t shake the feeling of impending doom. Miguel couldn’t shake the feeling that today was going to be the last time he saw his son and he was going to be forced to watch his death live.

Ángel was the one who ended up comforting him, as he had typically done throughout his life. Miguel hated it, but was happy to have a son who was supportive of him. ”You’re right. You’re right,” he mumbled time and time again, trying to make himself believe it as much as his son did. ”We’ll come home and have dinner together.” Miguel was nodding his head as he spoke, but the overwhelming feeling of despair was still tugging at him.

The reaping began. Miguel was so nervous he thought that he might pass out. His breathing was difficult and legs were weak. As the name for the boy was about to be drawn, he held his breath. His eyes were tightly shut as he prayed, but God had different plans than he did.

Ángel Acosta García!

If it wasn’t for the people next to him he would have collapsed. Their arms wrapped arm him and for once he didn’t panic about that. Miguel had other things to worry about. ”Ángel…” he whispered as his boy walked up on stage. His prayers came fast and furious that someone would volunteer, but those words never came. His boy was going to be in the games. Their goodbye wasn’t long enough and soon enough his son was gone and he was left alone to pray. Tears welled up in his eyes to where he didn’t notice the individual coming up beside him.

tonight you're fuel for my fire
Lana hated the reapings. Not because she had a chid, but because of the memories she had from when she herself was a child, ripped from her parents at the tender age of thirteen to take part in a brutal game. She’d survived, sure, but it took a long time for her to feel alive again. To be able to connect with people again, and feel some semblance of normal and real after the terrors she’d had to commit when she was in the arena just to stay alive. She tried not to watch the games, and had only been a mentor once, but when her mentee died, she backed out and refused to do it again.

Having been at the back of the crowd for the reaping, she’d watched on the screens as they focused on Angel and his father. She had hoped one of the stronger males up front would volunteer, but there was no volunteer this year. No one was well enough trained, she supposed, or no one cared. Either way, Angel was off to the games and Miguel was here, alone, watching in terror.

Because she was a victor, she could generally go wherever she wanted, so she waited as the train pulled away, so she could offer at least a little comfort to Miguel. A friend to lend an ear, because she was sure he needed someone to talk to about it. Once the train was out of sight and Miguel was alone, she stepped up beside him, ”Hi,” she said softly and then realised she hadn’t a damn clue what to tell him. That he’d be okay? That he’d come back alive? She couldn’t promise that. She wasn’t going to be there, and even if she was, he’d probably die anyway.

”Why don’t you come sit down,” she said, trying to keep her tone as coaxing as possible and as comforting as well. She wasn’t sure why it was he whom she’d gone to comfort but there was something about him that she felt needed more protection and comfort than the two parents of the little girl. They at least had each other. He seemed to have no one but Angel.

Miguel stood there as the train went out of sight. His son was now gone. Angel was going to participate in the games.

There was a good chance he had just said goodbye for the last time.

He didn’t want to move, his gaze remained fixed on the train tracks, like he could still see his son or that for whatever reason, the train would turn around and his son would jump back into his arms, safe and sound.

”Hi.” The voice was soft and gently pulled him out of the trance he had been in. His dark gaze slowly found the woman who was talking him. It took a moment before his eyes focused so he could realize who it was talking to him. In his muddled mind, it took him a while to place her. Lana Fa, the victor that chose not to be a mentor. Right now, he wasn’t sure that he wanted to talk to her. Not when she wasn’t there doing what she could to make sure that his son was going to come back alive.

But, no matter how much he wanted to believe it, Miguel knew what the truth was.

It took a while before Miguel moved and went to sit down as it really began to sink in that his son was gone. ”Are they going to teach him everything?” Miguel whispered, his gaze now focused back on the tracks. ”Will he have a chance?” He knew the answer, but right now he thought he wanted someone to lie to him.
