San Diego always seemed to have a variety of events going on. They were never short of them, but this month there was a few multicultural ones. Miguel had been to the event earlier in the month, Fiesta Del Sol, soaking up the Latin flavors and the familiar music. He had gone both days, bringing Angel both times. It had been nice not only for him, but for his sister as well who seemed to enjoy it just as much as he did. There were even brief talks about going back to Spain, but they were brief. For Miguel, there was too much going on in the world and he didn’t know if Angel was ready to travel.

At least he wouldn’t have that conversation today. Today he was going with Lana.

They had begun spending more and more time together throughout the process. Miguel was enjoying her presence and was not wondering if he had something more. It had been so long since the last time. The last time was filled with drugs and alcohol which clouded his judgement. Now he was a different person and not entirely sure what it was supposed to feel like .But, he wasn’t going to push that for a while. For now, they were going to be friends.

It wasn’t easy getting Angel ready, but eventually he was settled in his carseat and they were off to get Lana.

Arriving at her place, he text her to let her know that he was there, not wanting to leave Angel alone in the car. ”¡Hola!” He greeted with a little smile as she got into the car. ”How are you?” Miguel waited until she was buckled and settled before he started to head towards the festival.

tonight you're fuel for my fire
There were two reasons Lana was going to the street festival today. The first was the promise of a variety of ethnic foods that she could shove into her gob, the second was that she enjoyed spending time with Miguel and his son Angel. At first, it had been because he was the architect helping her reach her dream restaurant but now it was…friendship. Maybe something else was hidden underneath, but for now, she focused on the friendship aspect. Having crushes didn’t go very well for Lana, so everyone was a friend until they weren’t.

Because she’d been so busy with the opening of the restaurant, she hadn’t gotten to the barber in awhile and her hair hung below her earlobes. She’d done her best to tie it up in a tiny tail on the top of her head but it felt ridiculous paired with her jeans and tee shirt. She debated pulling her hair out of the tail for a few moments before she got the text from Miguel telling her that he had arrived. That ended her debate and she stopped foolishly playing with her hair and instead locked up the house and said a quick bye to her dog.

Lana easily slipped into the front seat of Miguel’s car and offered him a small, friendly smile. ”Hi,” she greeted as she buckled in, ”I’m good. Glad for a little relaxation time.” She hadn’t had much of that in awhile, and this would be fun. ”How are you?” she asked, glancing back at Angel and offering the little boy a bright smile. Lana’s soft spot for kids was never more apparent than when she was around them, and it was certainly apparent around Angel.

”Are you ready for this?” she asked with a slightly lopsided smile, her excitement growing as she thought about the foods that she’d consume and the crafts she might purchase. She did need some knick knacks for her office at the restaurant. She also looked forward to the music, because while she wasn’t musical at all, she could appreciate it in others.

Nodding, Miguel hoped that it would be relaxing for her. For him, it was always up in the air for these events. Sometimes they could be relaxing and others it was a stressor for him. All the people running around and bumping into him was a nightmare. Then having to worry about Angel increased that anxiety. Sometimes, he had to leave because he simply couldn’t handle it.

”I’m good.” His eyes were focused on the road as the traffic began to pick up. During this heavy traffic his hands needed to remain at ten and two. It was the safest place to be. ”He’s been good too.” Miguel told her as he noticed her glance back at his son. He had learned quickly that Lana had a soft spot for the little boy. ”He runs everywhere. It’s nerve-wrecking.”

Taking in a deep breath, he thought about it for a moment before shrugging. Truthfully, he was never ready for events like this. ”Not really.” This event was one day only, so he imagined it would be more crowded than Fiesta del Sol and that event made him anxious enough. ”The crafts should be good.” He was hesitant on the food. Not everyone would be so willing to have him watch the food be made. ”Maybe the food.” Lana would make it better, at least he hoped so.

”What are you looking forward too?” He thought the food would interest her the most, but maybe she was more excited for one of the other events. Miguel didn’t really know. That was part of this too thought, getting to know her better.

”Are you ready for your restaurant to open?” The date was getting closer and closer. This was something she had been waiting for for months now and it was about to happen.

tonight you're fuel for my fire
Lana cracked a little, very real smile when Miguel spoke about Angel running everywhere and wrecking his nerves. ”Kids do that, I heard,” she said, her tone somewhat humoured as she offered him another small half smile. She could just see it in her head, little Angel running around and Miguel running after him, picking up anything that got knocked over or relatively mussed. The image was…cute. She wouldn’t admit that, and wouldn’t mention it.

”I’m looking forward to the food,” she said, obviously enthused, ”And the music. And crafts. I am just looking forward to not focusing on the restaurant, honestly.” All of her thoughts had been consumed by the opening of the restaurant and she barely had time to think about anything else, let alone enjoy something other than tweaking recipes and finishing last minute things like…the design of the menu.

Nodding, she offered him another smile, ”I’m ready. I just need it to happen already,” she answered readily, ”I’m tired of waiting for it to open.” She couldn’t help but be tired of waiting when it felt like she’d waited her whole life to have her own place to cook and call her own. ”What are you going to do now that it’s built?” she asked, wondering if he had a new project he was ready to work on. She wondered if they would still have time to spend with each other once he was working on something new. She knew architecture took a lot of time, so maybe he’d be too busy.

Finally they arrived at the edge of the festival and it was time for them to find a place to park. It was already rather crowded so hopefully they would find something.

”It’s true,” Miguel told her with a little sigh. Deep down, he knew all along that he was going to be dealing with what Angel was going through at one point, but that didn’t make it any easier. Especially when he had lived in denial of it for so long. Bernie had done his best to encourage him to let his son live and be free, but it was easier said than done.

Lana was as enthused about this event as he expected her to be. Maybe even more so. It seemed she was ready to get out and enjoy the outdoors. But, when she had been focused on the restaurant for so long he couldn’t blame her. Miguel often found himself wanting to take a break after seeing a building through till the end, but he usually couldn’t. Another reason he was trying to find a new job. But, finding a new job was a struggle especially when he wasn’t sure what else he would do.

”I have another building planned,” he told her with a little sigh, obviously disappointed with the fact. He had wanted to spend more time with Angel, but once again it seemed he was going to be away from him far too much and his sister was going to have to take care of him. ”It’ll be a new bookstore.” He thought it was rather risky for an individual to have a building built for their bookstore when people seemed to lean towards ebooks, but nevertheless, he was still going to make sure it was built for them.

They arrived at the festival and Miguel began the process of driving through the parking lot trying to find some place to park. He could tell that it was already crowded and going to be a nightmare to enjoy anything they had to offer. But, he was going to try.

It took a while before he find a parking spot and offered Lana a weak smile as he got out and gathered up Angel and the stroller. ”Do you want to find something to eat first?” They had a bit of a walk before they would actually be in the festival, but Miguel was thinking it would be better to have a plan before they entered the chaos. ”Or look at the crafts?”

tonight you're fuel for my fire
Lana was interested in hearing about the bookstore he’d be working on, and was curious as to who was behind it. Bookstores were a risky business, but she supposed nothing replaced the feel of a fresh book and crisp pages in one’s hand for some people. She had messy bookshelves of cookbooks in her own home, it was disorganised but somehow she knew where each one was when she needed it.

”Let’s get something to eat and then look at the crafts while we eat,” she suggested so they could make the best use of their time in street festival. ”Maybe we can get something else to try after the crafts and watch some music,” she suggested as they walked past colourful people holding delicious looking treats and walking back towards where Lana and Miguel had parked. ”That all looks great,” she said, her stomach rumbling softly, almost inaudible over the chaos that was slowly beginning to surround them.

Hopefully, she thought, they wouldn’t get separated because if they did, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to find him again. The festival atmosphere brought Lana back to when she was a kid and her parents brought her to events like this, and the memories that surfaced were pleasant and made her smile. She remembered bringing her first dog, Moo, to one, and how he’d accidentally stolen some girl’s corndog and how he’d looked so proud of himself when he offered the slobbery corndog to Lana.

”This way,” she gestured with a nod of her head and started toward a clearing in the crowd behind a group of people messily eating something wonderful. She examined the set up behind the little table and hoped Miguel would be able to find something to try, ”What do you think?” She leaned closer to him to hear him over the hustle and bustle of the festival, the set up looked clean to her but she wasn’t him, and he needed to be the one to decide.

Miguel followed Lana through the clearing in the crowd. It was a relief to see a clearing. People were everyone leaving him on constant watch. The clearing allowed to him to relax even if it was a little bit.

A very little bit.

They stopped at a little setup that Lana seemed to think was good. Miguel’s dark eyes looked over it, debating if it was good enough. It didn’t look incredibly clean, but it was cleaner than some of the other places he saw. Peering in, he noticed that those who were touching the food were wearing gloves, so that was another positive. He still wasn’t sure, but maybe he could handle it.

Looking at the menu, he noticed a few things he would be willing to try and that they Angel would even like a few things. ”Umm…” Miguel thought he had decided, but when it came time to voice his opinion suddenly he was unsure; however, he was at a festival. He knew that they weren’t going to find a whole lot better. If he was going to eat he was going to have to pick a place.

”This place will work.” His gaze finally locked with hers again in hopes that that would reassure her he meant it.

That it would reassure him.

”What are you going to get?” Inside there was a part of him that was panicking. He was going to be eating this food and he was going to have his son eat this food.

Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.

”I was thinking that,” he started as he motioned towards the pictures that were available. ”And that for Angel.” He told her, pointing once again.

tonight you're fuel for my fire
It was dawning on Lana that maybe big, dirty crowds were not an ideal place to take Miguel. She knew she enjoyed this sort of atmosphere once in awhile, but it was not the sort of place Miguel would feel comfortable, and suddenly she felt bad for him. And a bit guilty, since she was sure this had been her idea, she should’ve been a little more thoughtful toward her friend’s germaphobic tendencies. She’d have to make it up to him somehow, she wasn’t sure how, but she’d figure that out later. Lana peered at the pictures he gestured at and then pointed out a few things that looked good to her, ”I think probably that, it has variety.” She liked variety, and then she could taste a few things instead of just one thing, and wasn’t that the point?

”If you want to try anything I order, you can take a bite before I do,” she told him, that way he didn’t have to deal with her germs. ”I’ll order stuff for us,” she said, ”And I’ll make sure they are clean for you.” Lana flashed him as bright of a grin as she had, and stepped up into line to order. When she got to the front, she pointed out the things they wanted and then attempted to explain to the guy cooking that some of the items couldn’t touch and the sauce should be on the side. It seemed like she’d succeeded when she stepped away with her hands full of plates and well separated food items. She didn’t know if it would be good enough for Miguel but at least she’d tried.

Lana took everything to him, ”Let’s find somewhere to sit,” she said, scanning the crowd and spotting an empty table that was miraculously not covered in trash. ”How about there?” she asked and then cringed as someone took the coveted seats.

HEARTLINES

Miguel was searching for a table. His dark eyes looking for one that was open and clean. Lana had found one and was ready to pounce on it, but they were too slow. Someone else had sat there. The man tried to relax, knowing that he had enough to clean the table, but he was still panicking at the idea.

”Maybe there?” His nose scrunched up at the thought of sitting there. He’d go through a lot of wipes before they sat there. Luckily, one family got up and left. He’d still have to wipe the table down, but at least it looked cleaner. Without asking, Miguel moved to claim that one, quickly pulling out the wipes to scrub down the table and the seats. Everything needed to be clean, he didn’t know what went on here.

When the table was clean, he made sure that Angel got settled before getting settled himself. It was then that he noticed that Lana had more plates than she should have and everything was seperated. ”You ordered things on separate plates?”
