mercifully for his boss, clair had finally decided to use his leave. he had not touched a single one unless he was sick, and even that was for a maximum of two days until he was back at work. he couldn't help it. he liked working, liked putting assholes behind bars, or making his opponent's life difficult for him to win his case. now, with kay in his life, clair decided to use his leave to get out of the united states for a bit. and with kay having mentioned multiple times that she was longing to travel again, clair had made the decision to go with her. it was just like old times, times when he left san diego to go to aspen to snowboard, but this was an actual holiday. it felt a little odd to not go alone, but to also have to liaise with someone else about plans and all of that...but he really was excited.

he had slapped two plane tickets down to beijing in front of kay, and she had agreed immediately. he has never been to china, so it was a first for him. he was pumped to climb the great wall and eat the local food. he was also of course, well-aware of the country's lack of cleanliness and its noisy, loud people, but it was all part of the experience. clair was ready to leave whenever, and was itching for the due date to come soon. he had already packed in advance, and grabbed some last minute things the night before. he had also messaged becca and kass that he was going away for two weeks. unfortunately, he had yet to make things up with october, but he hoped to rectify that someday. god, he was horrible with family.

getting a cab, he made sure his luggage was loaded before heading to kay's place. hopping out, he knocked on her door, and rang her doorbell, hoping that she was ready too. "oi! you ready to go? cab's waiting," called clair. it was really early in the morning, so he was half-expecting a really cranky kay and some snappish reply, and while he might have stood to argue with her on a good day, he was a little too sleepy and grumpy himself to do so.

trouble, trouble, trouble

Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, with a grumble Kay stared at the coffee maker and willed it to work faster, only breaking out into a satisfied grin when it was done and she had the nectar of life poured into a mug before her. That didn’t stop her from taking a long sip from said travel cup and then refilling what she had taken, of course. Morning person Kay was not. For all that she was excited to go, shit, so excited to go, she was not all about the mornings. But her bags were packed and ready and now so was she. As soon as she had another cup or two.

She sipped at the still steaming nectar of life as she surveyed her bags and slowly tried to wake up more. Kay was an expert at packing. She had lived out of bags once in her life. She hadn’t had a permanent residence until… five or six years ago now she wanted to say? And it hadn’t been hard to convince Nate to let her take her vacation or pack up what she would need. It was weirdly satisfying though not to put out the notice to the magazines she photographed for saying she was on the move. Vacation. This would be an actual vacation. No paid photography.

Just her and Clair.

That made her itch a bit but she was excited all the same. She… well shit. She was enjoying herself a lot. She really was. And when he had slapped down those tickets she might have shrieked a little. And then grumbled about him doing it and all that, but she tried to sit on that. Badly. But she tried. She was excited. IT had been ages since she had gone to China or been in that area and she was itching to go again. She had been going a little stir crazy lately… so this was perfect.

The banging on the door caused her to turn and pour the rest of the waiting coffee to replace what she had drank into her cup and go to the door. ”Trying to wake the dead?” she grumbled, coffee not yet in place. Or in effect. She snorted and picked up her bags. ”I could be ready to go in my sleep, it’s you I’m worried about” she greeted with a grin as she hoisted said bag on hr shoulder and headed for the cab, ready to go! Yes please. She turned to walk backwards, taking another sip of her coffee and willing the caffeine to kick in before they boarded the plane. Cause she’d be a brat until then. Not that she wasn’t usually. And she wanted to be as excited as she actually was about this. She still couldn’t believe he had gone and done that, to be honest.

"you sleep like the dead," he retorted, shaking his head. and so did he, really, so he was in no place to judge. hell, it was nearing dawn, so he had every right to make a bit of a ruckus lest she had passed out on the floor out of exhaustion or something. he was a right mess himself whenever he was up at this hour, but kay looked immaculate as far as he was concerned. her hair was slightly messy...but he didn't even bother trying to fix it, or asking her to. it actually looked kinda cute. clair was glad to see that she was ready, though! she was in a good mood, and that was putting him in a good mood too. it looked like he really had made the right call for this. now it was making him more excited.

kay had made the right decision to drink coffee, and he made a mental note to grab a cup for himself at the airport. "you have every right to be worried. i'm dead on my feet," he chuckled wryly with a shake of his head. as if to prove his point, clair mockingly swooned dangerously on his feet, adding a touch of the dramatic with a loud girlish moon. he grinned at her, righting himself. seeing that she was all pumped and ready to leave, he followed after her out of her apartment. he could feel sleep trying to claim him for herself again, and he allowed that to happen the moment they were in the cab, head lolling on to kay's shoulder as a soft snore escaped his nose.

he was being shaken awake when they arrived. paying the cab driver, clair stepped out, stretched grumpily, and fetched their luggage. "whose idea was this?" he whined to nobody in particular. flopping an arm over kay's shoulders, the other hand busy dragging his luggage alone, he let out a loud grumble, all irritation poured out into one noise. "i might just...sleep the whole way there." that was a bit of an overstatement, the most that he would likely be knocked out for was only six hours. and they had transit. "you are now going to be my personal alarm clock for the flight."

The coffee needed to kick in ASAP. Or sooner. Kay was not a morning person. She was hardly an afternoon person. If she could somehow manage to be nocturnal and still get great daytime photos she'd be a happy camper. Thus, she was also a three cups of coffee in the morning type of gal. She was beyond excited to travel. And a bit nervous too deep down. But that would kick in way more once she was awake. She rolled her eyes at his assertion that she slept like the dead. Mostly because it was true. "Look who's talking," she grumbled and took another long swig of her coffee before she was out the door. Time to get this show on the damn road. She was ready to go. And sleep. But mostly go.

She snorted at his act about being dead on his feet and then rolled her eyes at him again, but far more amused this time. Just don't fall. I can't carry your giant self. I'm too small and delicate," she teased right on back. She couldn't put on the delicate lady voice without bursting into laughter so she didn't bother. She just grinned and flopped into the cab that was waiting for them instead of trying to live up to his swoon. Though the thought of it made her chuckle again and shake her head, still a little bit half asleep. Okay, more than a bit. But apparently more awake than Clair.

She blinked as his head fell to her shoulder and glanced over at him. Before reaching over with the hand not attached to the arm of the shoulder he was on to poke his forehead a few times to see if he was really asleep. And then, well, both of them didn't need to be sleep deprived and she was the one with coffee so she settled into the seat with a yawn and waited out the cab ride to the airport. And then amused herself poking him to wake him up once they got there. Before resorting to shaking when that didn't work. Jeez he was out.

"Yours," she was all too happy to point out with a nudge of her elbow before hoisting her luggage on to the shoulder farther from him and walking, excited but so ready to crash on the plain. It was a long enough trip to regain some hours and she usually slept to deal with jet lag. She nodded at his grumble. Yep, right there with him. And then she was nodding along. Totally going to sleep. Oh well, that was a bad idea. She arched a brow at him. Then you are so doomed, because I'm absolutely going to pass out" she pointed out. No way was she staying awake, she'd need at least two more cups of coffee before that was possible. Speaking of, she totally needed to finish it before security. Luckily, she had almost completely drained it so that was no problem. She yawned again. "This flights too damned early" thank you captain obvious. But whatever, she'd just keep walking in the direction of security and the gate because the last thing they needed was to pass out and miss the flight.

too small to carry him? clair's snort was good-natured. she had a point, she was small and delicate, but he wouldn't put it past her not to be able to. "what rubbish," he grinned and scoffed at her, rolling his eyes. "you can deliver me a punch that'll send me to timbuktu, but you can't lift my fatass up?" oh, the brunette had a hot, terrible temper that could get violent at times. clair was sure that with all that anger she'd be able to summon up some uncanny energy from somewhere to haul him back up. thank goodness that they were in the cab soon enough, or else he really would have passed out. the coffee was barely keeping him awake so to speak, which was why it was easy for him to drop off on kay's shoulder on the way there. he was grumbling when she woke him up again, oh boy, he was not a morning person at all.

clair groaned. he was almost regretting doing this, but he couldn't help but relive the moment of kay's eyes sparkling and her literally almost flying out of her seat at the site of the tickets. that really made him much better about the whole morning and waking up thing. it was the perks of travelling and all that, and kay has always been vocal about wanting to do so once more. this time, he had decided to come along with her. he was after all indeed, long due for a vacation. his bosses and family were always asking him to leave, so. he could placate them now. "fine, we can snooze together. happy?" his arm around her shoulder was also keeping him awake in a way, and he perked up a little more as they headed for the gate once security was finished.

and pass out he did for most of the flight, only waking up to eat and watch a couple of movies before he was passed out again. it was as though he was catching up on all the missed hours of sleep from spending long hours at work. during those waking moments, though, clair's hand had idly found kay's here and there, casually linking their fingers together without warning, only loosening when he dozed off again. it was a bit of a bold move on his part, but it did help get the message across to the silly, dense woman.

Kay grinned widely when Clair asked if she was happy and leaned into him slightly, nudging as she did. ”Totally ecstatic, cause I was going to pass out anyway” she pointed out. The bore of security at least didn’t take that long this early and weirdly entertained Kay anyway. She had done this more times than she could count and she was oddly happy to be doing it again because it was a precursor to travelling and that was all that mattered. Travelling with Clair too. She glanced back over at him again and couldn’t help a smile. Okay, yeah. Yeah. She was excited.

Weird about it, always weird about it. But that was how she had always been and she was going to just… continue being that way. Apparently. Oops.

Kay snuggled down into the familiar seat of the airplane as soon as they boarded and knew that she would be out for the count as soon as they were in cruising altitude. She had a weird superstition about watching the plane take off through the window, which kept her up for the first ten minutes or so just to od it, but after that she was out like a light as quick as could be. Only to wake up a time or two when the flight attendant came by, and decline the airplane food. So not her thing.

And to wake up again with Clair’s fingers wrapped around her own. She blinked. Oh. Okay. She smiled sleepily and linked her fingers back, okay with that. That was nice. And she slipped right back out to sleep, and stayed that way for the rest of the flight, only waking up when the altitude started to change and they started to land in a new country. It always felt like she was wired to the plane and knew when it was coming because she was up, and feeling a bit more refreshed, as they started to land.

Which led her to sit up straight and start poking Clair. Repeatedly. Again. But this time she was much more awake herself and grinning. ”Clair. Up sleepy head. Up. We’re nearly there” she insisted, because she’d be damned if she was the only one awake and excited when they were landing. She was so ready to land and go get more coffee and then get to it. It had been too long for her and she felt the travel bug waking right back up. It was practically making her vibrate as the plane landed and everyone stood up and blocked the aisles and no one was moving. ”I never get why everyone stands” she grumbled, but she herself was definitely just as impatient as those standing. And then she blinked. ”I thanked you for this, didn’t I? I’m bad at thanking.” Ah ha, perhaps a little blush. Little. But it was true. She forgot social niceties. A lot. It came from living and travelling on her own for a long time and, well, it was also just how Kay was.

dense child that Kay is xD<3 clair aster harwood
