split the sky, fallon & tomeo
Tomeo hadn't been at San Diego University very long - a month or so, tops. He'd started the year a little later because he'd had a little trouble getting into the country with all their strict rules and regulations. However now he was in he spent as much time as possible on campus or at the student practice (where the doctors could play with fake bodies to test their knowledge) or the robotics lab (where he was in the process of making a robot that could detect any injury or infection in a person and diagnose without the hassle of travelling to A&E or calling to get an appointment with a doctor.
However the journey in to Uni was long which meant that Tomeo literally spent as much time as he could there to make up for the travel time.Which was great for studying, not so great for his social life and while Tomeo had sort of made friends with his roommate, most of his friendships occurred online. Online he could sit in his pjs and eat a sandwich while having great in-depth, or not, conversations with people. People online were nicer than real people anyway.
But the downside to that was when it was pouring with rain and Tomeo was cowering under his umbrella while people rushed around him, he had no one to walk to and from class with and that was a little lonely. He had currently just come from a lecture on vaccines and was on his way to grab a coffee before he headed to the robotics lab when he spotted someone struggling with their bag which had just split open. And of course she wasn't wearing a coat in the pouring rain because why not?
Quickly walking over he held his umbrella over her head, hand up to show he came in peace. You hold the books, I'll fix the bag, he said simply, reaching for the bag with his free hand. He could have come over like a knight in shining armour with a hair flip and a phrase like 'do you need a hand?' because clearly she needed help and he didn't want to embarrass her by asking her to admit to it. Especially to a stranger, and especially to a man.
the one time fallon decides to actually show up to her classes, everything goes to shit. first, she forgets her laptop. so she has to go back, causing her to already be late to her first class - so she decides to just go for the second class, then, because her teacher has this dumb "being late means no admission" policy going on.
absolutely childish, if you ask her.
anyway, she makes it to her second class; turns out it got cancelled, which means she ended up coming to school for absolutely nothing. at least it meant she could go and get some coffee, though.
unfortunately, her misfortune didn't just end there. the second she set foot outside, rain came pouring down, and she obviously wasn't carrying an umbrella - because this truly was her day of terror.
fallon groans, eyes rolling back into her head. "for fuck's sake," she mutters underher breath, glancing over her shoulder and considering hiding out at school until the rain stops - but one look at the sky tells her it's not about to stop anytime soon. "ugh. fine. you win, nature."
slinging her bag over her shoulder, she sets out into the rain. makes it about halfway to the coffee store until she feels the strap of her bag break, her books tumbling out onto the floor. she looks down at them, blinks. "oh you have got to be fucking kidding me?"
she crouches down to pick up her stuff (but not before flipping off the sky). scrambling her books together, she sighs as she looks at her now broken bag. it's not that she doesn't have tons of other ones at home, it's just that she now has to carry her books by hand. in the rain. they're already soaked.
she's about to reach out, to grab her bag, when she suddenly feels the rain stop around her. she frowns, eyes glancing at the pair of feet next to her, then looks up. "i don't need your he-" she starts, cutting herself off mid-sentence.
oh, he's cute.
fallon smiles, gives him a small nod. "thanks."
Tomeo smiled and nodded, of course she didn't need his help - soaking wet in the rain with her books all over the floor. Yeah she was doing great. Bending down he picked up her bag and a few of the heavier books, keeping the umbrella over her head as he straightened up. Looking at the bag it seemed as if the seam holding the zip together had simply split. An easy fix, Tomeo had a repair kit in his own bag for such an occasion. However it was a lot easier to do it sitting down and not in the rain.
It's going to take a minute, he said, nodding towards a small campus coffee shop that he frequented more than his bank account would care to admit. I was going to get a coffee if you're not in a rush? he asked, I can fix your bag in the dry quicker than out here.
He assumed she would agree based on the fact they were both getting cold and wet and her books were starting to soak up some of the puddle they were sat in. Plus who didn't want a hot drink after a traumatic experience? Tomeo was pretty fortunate that most of his work was on his laptop which took up next to no room in his bag - he had picked up most of his textbooks in English but then written out the notes in Japanese on his computer to save space and also allow him to leave his heavy books behind.
Maybe she just wasn't big on taking notes - not many people were when highlighters were involved. Tomeo had just got into the habit of it from a very young age from translating Korean into Japanese. Making notes was the only way he could distinguish from the two languages.
